Review: OWC’s ambassador Ultra SSD Thunderbolt 5 provides transfer speed

by red

Thunderbolt 5 is a technology that has recently been adopted by Apple and Thunderbolt 5 SSD is not yet common. There is one of the first Thunderbolt 5 SSDs in the other World Computing or OW market.

OWC Ambassador Ultra
Bus -driven Ultra price starts at $ 330 and it comes with 2 TB or 4 TB capacity. SSD has a premium feeling, a black aluminum enclosure and an internal design that refers to the extinction of heat. It is not the maximum compact SSD, 5.1 inches long, 3 inches wide and 0.8 inches thick. It weighs 0.75 pounds, so when it is easily far away in a bag, you don’t want to walk around in the pocket.

OWOW
According to the OW, SSD has an IP 67 dust and water resistance rating, so it can hold temporary immersion in the water (though ensure that the end of the wire is dry before using it). It is huge and durable, but in a negative note it contains a built-in 9-inch Thunderbolt 5 only that is not isolationable. I’m not a fan of built-in cables, but it feels safely connected. It is still seen how it will be used for years. If the ambassador Ultra cable is damaged, SSD can be sent to OW to repair. At this point, the cable is not sold separately for self -repair, but the enclosure is open to simplify the cable.

Thunderbolt 5 has been determined due to the requirements and power draws of the Certificate, capable of reducing electricity damage with a short wire and providing more energy to SSD for better performance.

SSD Thunderbolt 4/USB 4 SSD can reach twice the faster, out of 6,000 MB/second over the maximum. Thunderbolt 5 with an M4 Pro MacBook Pro test, I didn’t hurt the maximum. In the benchmark examination with Blackmagick, it has written about 5,255mb/s written and maximized the 5,347MB/s reading. The real world file tests were very fast, transferred 50GB in about 15 seconds.

According to WWW, with sustainable file transfer, the writing speed will drop to 1,350MB/S for 2 TB models and for 4 TB models, when the reading speed is consistent. I saw the speed of writing at the nearly around 55GB mark.

OWOW
Even when transferring a lot of data, the envoy Ultra did not get more than light, and since there is no fan inside, it provides silent operation.

Ambassador Ultra needs a computer that supports Thunderbolt 5 on the Mac Side, including Apple’s latest M4 Pro and M4 MAX chips or M3 Ultra found in MAC Studios. Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4 Macs are compatible with SSD and you can still use it with them, but if you just put the equipment for one, you just want to choose a Thunderbolt 5 SSD.

If you have Thunderbolt 5 Mac and the fastest transfer speed you want you can get for work like turning huge video files, you are not going to go wrong with the envoy Ultra. It is well built, and it comes from a renowned company known for the drive.

For future proofing, you can get the envoy Ultra for use with the old Mac, but the price difference may not be suitable. There are very few Thunderbolt 5 SSD in the market now, so the prices are on the higher side. Of course, USB 4/TB 4 SSDs are also not super affordable and the envoy will give you the maximum Thunderbolt 4 speed.

With an M1 Max -MacBook Pro, I got about 3,000 MB/second continuous reading/writing speed, so I hit the Thunderbolt 4 limit.

2 TB USB 4 SSD which is operated in half of the ambassador Ultra speed is priced at $ 180 to $ 250, and 2 TB SSDS may be below $ 100 if you don’t even need USB 4 speed.

Bottom line

If you have Thunderbolt 5 Mac or are about to get one in the future and your super fast transfer speed, see the envoy Ultra. This is a tough product and the only damage for someone can be connected only.

How to buy

The envoy can be purchased from the Ultra OWBLUSI website. The 2 TB model is priced at $ 330, and 4 TB models are priced at $ 549.

Note: The OWC has provided a 2 TB ambassador ultra to the Macrumars for this review. No other compensation was found.
