I never knew I needed a portable USB-C desk lamp in my life, but here we are

I didn’t set out looking for a desk lamp, I was simply looking for ways to provide a little extra light for my Android Police photography. You know, for pictures like the ones you see at the top of our articles. For weeks, even months, I was lost among small LED panels, portable photo studios, huge light umbrella-like things, and every device in between. Then it occurred to me that for one person, Parisian apartments are small enough that I don’t have the luxury of space to store large props, and for two people, I probably only needed a small light or two to keep close by when taking photos. ..bedside lamp or…desk lamp?! Then I can also use it as a regular lamp too – what a new idea! In short, I ended up on the Baseus website trying to decide whether a USB-C rechargeable desk lamp or a magnetic under-cabinet lamp would better suit my needs. In the end, the first one won, and I’m glad about it, because it turned out to be more versatile than I thought.

But before we talk about function, let’s address the design first. I will be gushing over the lamp, so please be prepared for that. It seems Beautiful. It’s very simple and elegant, aesthetically, with straight lines and rounded corners, but it also looks a bit modern or dare I say futuristic with its tall, abstract columns. I have no concerns about it fitting perfectly on a desk next to any Macbook, Pixelbook, or Surface computer. Additionally, the entire front column can bend downward to reduce space and become an ambient night light, or rotate all the way down to transform into a blinding vertical light.

Leave: 3000 thousand. middle: 4500 thousand. right: 6000 thousand.

Simple features blend with minimal design here – nothing superfluous. USB-C port on the back, a touch-sensitive power button that can be tapped repeatedly to switch between three different light temperatures (3000K, 4500K, and 6000K) or long pressed to adjust brightness, a light sensor next to it, and an auto-brightness switch on the bottom . Would you have preferred a more precise way to control brightness? Yes, but this long tap gesture works well enough.

Cycling through different color temperatures and brightness.

But what I didn’t expect was how multipurpose this simple desk lamp could be. Firstly, I don’t have to worry about keeping it plugged in all the time, I just charge it every now and then using the USB-C cable I already have on my desk, and it can last up to 13 hours. Second, it works as an all-in-one light for everything, not just Android Police photography.

On a Meet call with my teammates? Rotate the shaft up so it lights up my face for video chats. Working a little later at night? Prop it horizontally to provide some light around my desk and work area. Do you need more light when taking photos for an article? Just grab it and move it to whatever table or surface I’m using as a backdrop for photos around the house, then adjust it however I want. The difference is not night and day, but just what I need to balance the objects and ambient lighting already in my apartment. When I’m done, I close it and leave it as it is.

Leave: Pixel 5, ambient light only. right: By using a lamp, the area is better lit with fewer shadows.

Leave: Marshall headphones, ambient lighting only. right: With the lamp, the headphone jack is more visible.

Leave: Video call, ambient light only. middle: Lamp at mid brightness. right: full brightness.

There’s no plugging or unplugging like with regular bulbs, no funky DC chargers like those used in LED photo panels, no big canopy to open and then store back in – no friction at all. (Sure, I realize it’s not as powerful as the larger settings, but it’s all I really need for my photos.) So, yes, I’m gushing over a desk lamp, but as you can see, it’s much more than just a desk lamp. The only worry I have now is whether I need another one, you know, because it would be better if I had two and I could put them on top of each other.
