Review: Throwboy’s iconic pillow lets you decorate with classic Apple product designs

Throwboy makes a variety of Apple-themed pillows, including the Iconic Pillow Collection, which began as a Kickstarter but is now available from the Throwboy website.

The Iconic Pillow Collection consists of five pillows, designed to look like some of the most important products Apple has released over the years, including the Apple II, the original Macintosh, iMac G3, iPod and iPhone.

All pillows are made from a soft plush material with a small pile, although displays and other accents are often felt or embroidered. The fabric is fuzzy and fun to touch and hold, and the stuffing inside is flexible with just the right amount of plushness when squeezed.

The pillows cost $39.99, but come in a variety of sizes. For example, Macs are much larger in terms of volume and take up more space than iPhones and iPads. Given the difference in size I’m surprised that the pillows all have the same price, especially since some Macs are more detailed simply because of the number of elements that need to be replicated.

Throwboy’s iPhone – the pillow is modeled after the original iPhone released in 2007. That iPhone features a silver body, and so the body of the pillow is made of a silver-gray material. The top and bottom bezels are made from the same plush material in black, while the screen is a slightly different material with a different shade of black to make it stand out.

I think the ‘iPhone’ pillow would stand out more with the icons on the display, but obviously it’s one a lot More embroidery, so this simple version works, although it’s less eye-catching than some of the others because of the black color. There is an embroidered home button, volume button rocker on the side, power button, a mute switch, speaker and microphone and a circular camera cutout on the back.

It’s faithful to the design of the original iPhone and remains recognizable as an iPhone The iPhone is the smallest of all the pillows (13 x 7 x 3 inches), so if you’re looking for an Apple pillow that doesn’t take up too much space, this is the one to get.

The iPod pillow is similar to the ‘iPhone’ pillow, but a little bigger and thicker with more defined edges. It is made of a white plush material with a gray back and is modeled after the original iPod released in 2001. The top has a yellow plush display with embroidered buttons and an embroidered click wheel.

The iPod pillow is one of my favorites of the bunch because it’s so recognizable and it’s so cute sitting on a sofa or chair. It’s a little more huggable than the iPhone because it’s slightly larger, measuring 13 inches by 8.5 inches by 4 inches.

Among the Mac pillows, the Classic Macintosh pillow is probably my favorite. It measures about 10 inches by 8 inches by 11 inches and is the perfect sofa pillow size. It’s certainly the prettiest design of the Mac bunch, crafted from a plush beige material with a black plush display area, an embroidered floppy drive and a rainbow pillow logo.

Out back, there are details that match all the components of the 1984 machine. It’s impressively intricate, with fan grills, speaker cutouts and other embroidered elements, plus it’s shaped like a classic Mac, only plusher.

The iMac G3 pillow, designed to look like Apple’s colorful iMac in aqua, is the fluffiest of the bunch and the cutest to hold or hug. This is my second favorite of the MAC pillows and the most colorful pillow of the bunch thanks to that blue accent. It’s about 13 inches by 9 inches by 8 inches, making it slightly larger than the others.

The front display is made from a plush gray material, surrounded by white plush and a blue plush fabric for the back. The speakers and disc drive are embroidered and have the classic iMac G3 design with handles on the back. Even the bottom has blue embroidered little feet.

The 1977 Pillow, which mimics the Apple II, is a large pillow, measuring 13 inches by 5 inches by 13 inches. The Apple II was an odd-looking computer, and because of its design it didn’t translate into pillow-sized as well as other products.

As with the other pillows, the detailing is great, though, and there’s really no mistaking that this is an Apple II. All the keys are embroidered and the display part of the pillow features a rainbow pillow logo. It is made of a beige material, with black material on the back.

Although called pillows, they are similar to plush toys as they have no removable components. You can’t take them apart for washing, which is something to keep in mind. You might be able to wash them on a gentle cycle in a pillow like you can sometimes with plush toys, but I’m not sure how that would affect the embroidery. (Update: Throwboy says the pillows can actually be washed in cold water on the gentle cycle and dried on a gentle cycle or line dried).

All of these pillows come with two throwboy tags, one on the back and one on the side. It’s also worth noting that they all have a pillow-style logo in place of the traditional Apple logo where appropriate.

$39.99 for a pillow may seem expensive, but they’re priced competitively with pillow and stuffed toys that share a similar intricate design, so the price seems reasonable for the quality and construction.

bottom line

Throwboy’s iconic collection of pillows are soft, plush, huggable and the perfect alternative to traditional throw pillows. Anyone who loves Apple products will love the throwboy pillow, which makes a great choice for office or home decor or to give as a gift.

I love how soft and plush these pillows are — they’re really comfortable for a quick nap or for reclining on the sofa or chair. Plus sometimes it’s nice to cuddle up to something super squishy and these are perfect.

People old enough to use these devices are going to love the throwback vibe, so if you’re a longtime Apple fan, it’s worth picking up a pillow or two.

How to buy

All pillows in the iconic collection can be purchased from the Throwboy website for $39.99 each.
