The MagPad by Cozy is a soft, silicone pad designed to fit over Apple’s MagSafe charger. Priced at around $7, the MagPad comes in a variety of colors and patterns.
Size-wise, the MagPad adds about an inch of extra space to the MagSafe charger and is about the size of a standard Qi-based wireless charger. The silicone material is textured and the bright colors are more attractive than the standard white ‘MagSafe’ color.
The back of the MagPad has a cutout for the MagSafe charger where it fits snugly, with a place to route the cord. The MagPad has a lip on top that fits to hold it in place, so it won’t go anywhere when connected to a MagSafe charger.
The silicone surface where the MagPad covers the MagSafe charger is thin, but it weakens the magnetic connection, which I found to be a plus. When I use the MagSafe charger at my desk, disconnecting it from my iPhone is a hassle.
I tend to use a gesture where I use a thumb or my fingers to detach it and slide it in so I don’t have to pick it up with my iPhone, and turning on the MagPad makes it easier. I have a lot of surface area so it takes my fingertips to pick up my iPhone, leaving the MagSafe charger on the MagPad on my desk without disturbing it.
At the same time, there’s still enough of a magnetic connection that I can set my iPhone up and attach it to the right place to charge, so the actual fast magnetic adhesion isn’t affected, nor is the charging speed. The iPhone is perfectly aligned through the silicon layer, so charging is no longer affected when you use a case.
In my tests, my iPhone–12 charged from dead to 67 percent in an hour with the MagPad and a MagSafe charger, which is faster than I’ve seen charging the MagSafe charger on its own in some situations.
If you have a MagSafe Duo, MagPad functionality is similar. Detaching an iPhone from a MagSafe Duo is much easier than a standard MagSafe charger simply because of the extra material that allows you to quickly and easily get your fingers in the right place to disconnect the iPhone from the charger.
With the MagSafe charger as a desk charger, the MagPad does a great job of making it easy to use. Koji says it’s also able to resist rings that can be imprinted on leather cases from Apple, but I don’t have a leather case to test this. The premise makes sense, though, because the MagPad is adding a silicon layer that weakens the magnetic connection to reduce the power of the charger.
Anyone who uses the MagSafe charger as a charging option while their iPhone is in use might not like the MagPad, but if you use it in multiple ways, it’s worth noting that it’s easy to switch off when needed. It works with a bare iPhone and an iPhone in a MagSafe-compatible case.
bottom line
If you want an accessory to make the MagSafe charger look better on a desk, or if you want a simple solution to make picking up your iPhone 12 model easier, the MagPad is worth checking out. It’s affordable, functional, and overall a great little add-on option to enhance Apple’s MagSafe‖ charger for desktop use.
