Govee Floor Lamp 2 Review: Taller, Better, Brighter, and Smarter

by red

There’s no better time than the present to get into the world of smart lighting. There are more lighting brands out there, some can be used outdoors, and integration is more seamless than ever (with Alexa and Google Assistant compatibility spreading and Matter certification gaining popularity). We humans are evolving—or rather, we’re finally getting rid of the cardinal sin of overhead lights in the home.

Govee is a trusted name in smart lighting. From strip lights to bulbs to holiday lights, the Govee range covers everything you need to light up your home. The Govee Floor Lamp 2 is one of the latest releases, bringing the brand’s smart floor lamp range to five members.

The Govee Floor Lamp 2 stands just under five feet tall and features over 80 lighting modes to match specific moods, mimic nature environments, or capture your favorite holiday celebrations. Govee has added a light to its smart lamp bases in this generation of floor lamps, which can be kept lit independently of the light strip, serving as a gentle nightlight for late-night guests or kitchen projects.

Positives

  • Works with Alexa and Google Assistant
  • Over 80 scenes
  • Tons of color customization
  • Interactive modes with music
cons

  • The lamppost is not rotating.
  • Light parts are noticeable.

Price, availability and specifications

The Govee Floor Lamp 2 is priced at $150. You can buy it directly from Govee, where it’s already discounted to $120, or from Amazon.

What are the good features of Govee Floor Lamp 2?

Height has its advantages.

Approximate light from Govee Floor Lamp 2

The Floor Lamp 2 is the bigger, better sibling of the Govee Lyra. It’s brighter at 1,725 lumens (compared to the Lyra’s 1,500 lumens). It also includes Matter control and Alexa and Google Assistant. (It lacks Apple HomeKit compatibility, so Apple-powered smart homes may find better functionality in the Philips Hue Gradient Signe Floor Lamp.)

The redesigned Floor Lamp 2 base introduces gradient-style lighting, which, in my opinion, isn’t as visually appealing as the Floor Lamp Pro, but is still an upgrade over the Lyra.

High quality smart mood lighting

The Floor Lamp 2 won’t serve as the sole light source for a room. By design, the long strip of light isn’t bright enough or good enough to evenly distribute light to illuminate a large area. Additionally, this strip of light is quite distracting when viewed directly at it, so it’s best when pointed at a wall or out of direct line of sight. This way, the lamp instead casts a soft glow over a small radius, making it an excellent accent lighting piece hidden in a corner. You could also place a pair of these around your gaming desk or use them as a light source for a small reading nook.

This app features over 80 light scenes, ranging from nature-inspired to mood-based. I like that you can change the animation speed for each scene, but the real customization comes in Govee’s DIY feature. Here, you can set unique color schemes and even different animations and timings, like ripples and gradients, for individual light strip segments and basic circular light strips.

You can also let Govee automatically choose a color scheme based on a photo you upload to the app, or choose pre-made schemes based on famous art, sports logos, plants, holidays, or food. It’s fun to play around with when you first get the lamp—I even used Govee’s Minnesota Timberwolves-based scheme in a vain attempt to boost their conference finals chances—but I settled on having a handful of favorite schemes.

Simple bright lighting options are also available if you want to energize your space with some white light.

I added the Floor Lamp 2 to my Google Home, replacing the one I had a smart bulb installed on. The Floor Lamp 2 performed just as well in this smart home integration, following routines accurately and allowing Google Assistant to adjust its brightness. However, if you use Google Home and prefer your Govee bulb to have different color schemes at different times of the day, the smart home automation becomes confusing.

The Google Home can only turn on the lamp using the last scheme it was set to or turn it on with a simple monochrome display. Since I love the bright, warm white light in my Google Home “good morning” routine, and my partner loves the vibey violet-blue-pink screen called aura in the Govee app for my “I’m home” routine after work on the Google Home, this means one of us is doomed to manually go into the Govee app and choose our preferred lighting even though the Floor Lamp 2 is integrated into our Google Home.

What’s bad about Govee Floor Lamp 2?

I feel like the place is a bit crowded.

I mentioned that the height of the Govee Floor Lamp 2 might provide an advantage, such as placing it next to a desk under a high bed, but others might prefer the 8-inch-tall Floor Lamp Pro. The Floor Lamp 2’s light post is also fixed, as it’s mounted to its base at one angle. The Pro’s light post can rotate fully clockwise, so you can choose different lighting angles.

Many smart lighting users enjoy syncing their lighting to media sources, such as TV or music. The Floor Lamp 2 offers nine music-synced lighting shows, plus a tenth custom option. Responding to music is a common feature in Govee’s many lamps and lighting fixtures, such as Curtain Lights. On the Floor Lamp 2, this feature works well enough, if you don’t watch the lamp closely. Stare at it for more than a few seconds, and you’ll notice that the lamp consistently lags by a second or two.

Why settle for an RGB strip when you can have an RGB wall?

I’m also not a huge fan of the Floor Lamp 2’s bulky, lumpy-looking plug. I prefer the Pro because it uses a standard-sized plug with an adapter block on top of the cord to avoid taking up space near a surge protector or outlet.

The individual lights in the light strip are spaced far enough apart that if you look directly at the light, especially in low-light settings or with dark colors like blue and purple, you can make out each bit of light. This isn’t a problem with the Floor Lamp Pro, but you’ll rarely notice it if the light is pointed at a wall. I also like the height of the Floor Lamp 2; it’s shorter than the Pro and looks better in some scenarios because of this.

Should you buy it?

Govee 2 Floor Lamp Base White Light

The Floor Lamp 2 may be an improved version of Govee’s Lyra Corner Floor Lamp, but it’s not the most advanced in Govee’s lineup. When comparing the Floor Lamp 2 to Govee’s other new lamp, the higher-end Floor Lamp Pro, there are a fair number of features you’re missing out on. As a mid-range option, the Floor Lamp 2 lacks the Bluetooth speaker that’s housed in the Floor Lamp Pro’s base. In fact, the added speaker functionality, elevated appearance, and brighter light are why I prefer the Pro. The Floor Lamp Pro’s light also rotates to cast light in any direction you prefer, a feature the Floor Lamp 2 doesn’t share.

I wish the Floor Lamp 2’s base had the same pieced-together look as the Lyra and Pro because I feel the one-piece plastic base detracts from the aesthetics a bit. If the bases of the three models are the same, you could also buy one Pro and one Floor Lamp 2 if you only need one speaker in a room without the two lamps looking mismatched.

However, if your home is already filled with speakers and you’re looking for a smart lamp to illuminate your reading nook or gaming desk without lighting up the entire room, the Floor Lamp 2 is a great option, especially since its low price also makes it an easier option to buy in pairs. It also works seamlessly with Google Home and shares the same smart home compatibility as the Pro Lamp.

So, overall, the Floor Lamp 2 meets the most important requirements, even leaving some upgrades to its premium sibling.

While the Floor Lamp 2 isn’t Govee’s most advanced floor lamp, it is compatible with two major smart home assistants, and hopefully will expand in the future. It offers new lighting at the base, and over 80 unique color displays to suit any mood.
