Ecovacs Goat GX-600 Review: Perfect Name, Perfect Lawn Care

by red

Robotic lawn mowers have been around for a few years now, making lawn care easier. While most products rely on boundary wires, manufacturers have been working hard to develop more advanced technology to make setup easier. This includes using GPS or RTK technology to allow the lawn mower to pinpoint its location without boundary wires. Other companies, such as Dreametech, have introduced a LiDAR-based navigation system, which uses the same technology used in robotic vacuums for navigation.

With the same concept in mind, Ecovacs has used its robotic vacuum expertise to make setting up its latest robotic lawn mowers easier. In fact, instead of setting boundaries, either virtually by driving the mower around and marking the boundaries or physically installing a wire, the Ecovacs Goat GX-600 uses its built-in camera and sensors to automatically mark the boundaries of your lawn. However, while it’s reliable and does a great job of taking care of your lawn, it does have some limitations.

What are the good features of Ecovacs Goat GX-600?

Easiest setup ever!

With its 150 degree wide angle camera, the Ecovacs Goat GX-600 can automatically explore your garden and determine its boundaries. This is a huge advantage over the competition. It doesn’t require any complicated wire boundary setup or manually creating virtual boundaries where you drive the robot around your garden to “show” the boundaries of your garden. All you have to do is follow the instructions when placing the station on your garden, and the robot will do the rest. I’ve spent hours setting up other models, and the time I’ve gained with this one is truly amazing, as I had it installed in minutes.

Once set up, the robot worked great. I’ll admit I was skeptical about its performance, as I often struggle with finding the right border setting with other robots. With the Goat GX-600, I couldn’t set the border, so I wasn’t sure how it would perform. To my surprise, it was able to cut precisely, getting as close to the edges as possible while managing corners better than some other models. You can choose between a single pass or a cross pass, ensuring that you cover the entire lawn without missing any spots.

The GX-600 is also designed to handle rough terrain, thanks to its large wheels. This allows it to handle slopes of up to 40% or 21 degrees, ensuring that your entire garden is covered, even if it’s not flat. Furthermore, the built-in camera allows the robot to detect and avoid obstacles, ensuring that you don’t accidentally cut up a game or hurt an animal. Depending on the potential obstacles the robot will encounter, you can choose between different sensitivity options.

As with most lawnmowers, the Goat GX-600 can sense rain and automatically stop the mowing cycle to avoid damaging your lawn. Likewise, you can set mowing schedules to ensure your grass is always fresh and cut at the ideal times. Finally, at just $1,300, the Ecovacs Goat GX-600 is very affordable compared to competing cordless lawnmowers, making it worth considering if you have a compatible lawn.

What’s bad about Ecovacs Goat GX-600?

You should have a “simple” garden.

While the Ecovacs Goat GX-600 is particularly easy to set up and provides a reliable and simple mowing experience, it’s not completely flawless. For starters, the app lacks a proper mapping feature. Unlike other advanced robot mowers, the Goat GX-600 doesn’t create a visual map of your lawn that you can review in the app. As such, you can’t see the areas it has covered or visually plan its mowing path. Likewise, you can’t see where it has sensed and avoided obstacles, making it difficult to identify and manually clean up unmowed areas with a mower.

Additionally, while the Goat GX-600 is much easier to set up than most competitors, it does require an entire yard to operate. So, if your yard is divided into separate, disconnected sections, the Goat GX-600 won’t be able to recognize them and will only be able to work on one area.

Since the lawn mower uses its camera to determine boundaries, your yard should be fenced with clear boundaries or paths because it will not be able to understand its boundaries and will not be able to operate properly. Also, if you have flower beds, ponds or a swimming pool in your yard, they should be clearly separated from the grass with a boundary or path; the lawn mower may not be able to determine them and will try to cut your flowers.

The app also has relatively limited settings. For example, you can’t customize the mowing style, angle, or mowing zones as much. Furthermore, unlike some models that allow you to change the mowing height via a mobile app, the Goat GX-600 requires you to physically adjust the mower. This can be annoying if you prefer to manage all of your settings remotely. These issues are definitely a downside compared to competing models, such as the Dreametech A1. However, remember that the Goat Gx-600 is primarily designed for ease of use.

Should you buy it?

Yes, if you have a compatible garden!

The Ecovacs Goat GX-600 robotic lawn mower is probably the easiest to install on the market. Thanks to its camera, it can automatically recognize the boundaries of your lawn and save a lot of setup time, eliminating the need for boundary wires and allowing for precise navigation and obstacle avoidance. It is a reliable choice for your lawn care. Additionally, the ability to handle rough terrain and slopes of up to 40% also makes it compatible with different types of gardens and yards, while obstacle detection makes it a safe choice for your family, especially if you have children and pets.

However, the GX-600 isn’t for everyone, especially if your yard has a complex or divided design. Fortunately, you can check compatibility on the Ecovacs website before purchasing. Overall, if you prioritize ease of setup, reliable performance, and have a simple yard design, the Ecovacs Goat GX-600 is a good choice. However, if you need more advanced features and customization, you may want to consider other options on the market that offer more flexibility.
