Dozens of people are switching back to Windows 10

Microsoft continues to struggle with Windows 11 adoption among its users. Recent data from Statcounter reveals a notable decline in the operating system’s market share, specifically compared to Windows 10.

After reaching a record high of 28.16% in February 2024, Windows 11 has since dropped to below 26%.

From March to April 2024, Windows 11’s market share fell by more than a full percentage point, from 26.68% to 25.65%. The majority of those users appear to have switched back to Windows 10, and despite being nearly nine years old, the previous operating system surged past the 70% mark for the first time since September 2023, gaining 0.96 points.

Despite the lack of official support and the perceived developer community, even Windows 7 still exists. Statcounter noted in its report that about 3% (-0.04 points) of all Windows PCs still run on Windows 7, even after its complete discontinuation in January 2023. While some developers still support Windows 7, major apps and browsers have long since stopped supporting it.

Microsoft is set to unveil innovative AI capabilities for Windows 11, potentially giving users a compelling reason to make the switch from Windows 10. However, several reports suggest that certain features will be exclusive to PCs running on newer hardware. Customers who choose not to upgrade their PCs may therefore need more motivation to stick with Windows 10. It’s important to note that Windows 10 support ends in October 2025. This gives users roughly 19 months to upgrade their PC, buy a new machine, or stick with an outdated operating system. Microsoft has been pushing Windows 10 users to upgrade to Windows 11 via intrusive pop-up ads.

Although the upgrade to Windows 11 is free, it is clear that not everyone is willing to make the switch.
