For a few years, ASUS Chromebook Flip C302 was one of the best OS Chrome devices around it. Its design, which looks like a MacBook, the wonderful keyboard, support the Android app (though came a few months after the version), a good screen, and the price point of $ 500 made it a great computer for many. I must know – it has been the main laptop for more than a year. The C302 was due to an upgrade for some time, and ASUS finally gave it. Chromebook Flip C434 is the new ASUS Chromebook, with an updated design and larger screen. It is also the most expensive; While C302 started at $ 500 for the M3 Core and 4GB RAM (and now goes to approximately $ 470), the C434 level with the M3 CPU and 4 GB RAM are $ 569.99. The model, which contains 8 GB of $ 600, will restore you. C434 is a C302 successor, but it contains various barters compared to the previous model – along with a higher start price.

The aluminum body feels par excellence, and the smaller screen is a welcome improvement.

The 1080p 14 screen gives you a large space for productivity and media consumption.

Not very good

Design (again)

It is difficult to use it to mode the C302 tablet.

There should be truly 8 GB of RAM on the basic model.

It is difficult to get 8GB RAM in the United States now.

Design and devices

The most severe change from C302 to C434 is the design. It cannot be seen on the MacBook aesthetic screen and the large screen on the C434, and it is replaced by something very similar to the ASUS assortment of Zenbook Windows Ultrabooks. The wet aluminum finish is used, with silver turning around the hinges and touch plate.

The screen is to improve the main design. Although it still has a resolution of 1080 pixels (not the 14 -inch laptop needs anything higher), the surrounding edges have been significantly reduced. The screen looks like a Dell XPS or MacBook Pro, and gives you more productivity. The web camera is still located on top.

Another improvement on C434 is connection. There are still two USB 3.0 Type-C port on each side, both of which are able to charge, but ASUS added a one-time-teddy connector this time. It would be some time until the original USB connector goes to Firewire, so this is a welcome improvement in my book. There is also a compound/microphone headphone and a microSD card opening.

The mechanism of the hinges, called ASUS “Ergolift”, is an interesting feature. Opening the laptop raises the keyboard at a slight 3 degree angle, instead of being flat. However, this means that two four rubber feet are not completely contact with the office/table, which may cause a slightly decreased laptop on some surfaces.

Another negative aspect of this new design is the tablet mode. Although the C302 was very comfortable to use and supplement as a tablet, the larger screen mix and the gap between the keyboard and the width means that this facebook is not very good in … flipping.

The internal devices are the place where things become complicated. Just like the original C302, ASUS sells multiple variables of C434 with different devices. The processor can be an Intel Core M3-8100Y, i5-8200Y or i7-8500Y, and you can get 4 GB or 8 GB RAM. There are also three storage options: 32 GB, 64 GB, or 128 GB (all EMMC). To return to it, I am testing the M3 with 4GB RAM and 64 GB of storage.

I noticed two errors related to the device on the C434. First, whatever the stated sensor determines whether the C434 in the tablet mode or the laptop mode does not work sometimes properly. For example, when I open the Chromebook of Sleep, it sometimes takes a few seconds until the keyboard is activated. Also, when calling the hot point on the OnePlus 6T, Wi-Fi sometimes separates (even when the phone is next to the laptop), and I did not test this problem with any other device I own.

The keyboard and tracking plate

I am not a huge fan of the keyboard in C434. The design is good, with decent size switches and rear lighting support, and the keys themselves are not a very accurate click of the keys in the Dell XPS 13. However, it will get used to that after a few days, at least the keys (perhaps) will not fall from the computer.

The tracking plate is also disappointing. It is large enough to use and comfortable gestures, but I wanted to see ASUS COPY giants. Feeling clicking a little, but again, you will get used to it after a while.

Voice and display speakers

As we mentioned earlier, the screen is likely to be the most severe change of the previous Chromebook devices for ASUS. It is a large IPS panel of 1920 x 10 x 1080, with good viewing corners and a decent level of brightness. The small edges C434 also make more installment, and the web camera (fortunately) is still on the screen.

Speakers on C434 are not bad at all. It can become very loud – it usually kept its size at approximately 20 % – but there is a noticeable distortion at the higher levels. The speakers are working down, but I was not really objectionable.

Performance and battery life

M3-8100Y at the C434 base is a simple improvement on the oldest M3-6730 that is shipped in C302. Both have cores/4 and 14nm volumetric edition, but 8100y has a faster base (900 MHz for 1.10 GHz) and Turbo (2.20 GHz for 3.40 GHz).

The TDP 5W processor, which allows the C434 to be completely silent, will still not match the Chromebooks performance with TDP 15W chips (such as del Mspiron Chromebook 14, and Acer Chromebook Spin 13). If you are interested in standards, M3 C434 3591 has recorded mono -core performance and 6950 -core performance in Geekbench 4 (full results here). On Speedbench 2.0, record the 82 laptop. This is a decent improvement on C302, which was recorded in Geekbench 4 2,707 for mono -core performance and 5,041 for the core material. (Full results here).

Technical conversation aside, C434 is a very fast and fast response computer. I don’t pay my own laptops, but the 4 GB treats the usual work burden (usually only 5-20 chrome tabs and some Android applications) like the hero.

The battery life is too good. Asus says that Chromebook should last up to 10 hours, but in my test, this is closer to 8 hours by 60-80 % of brightness. This is a little different depending on what is happening now, so keep in mind that your use may be different from me.

Should you buy one?

Yes. ASUS Chromebook C434 is a good laptop, with strong performance and distinctive design. Although it is not equal to the most powerful of modern Chromebooks devices that fill 15W Intel CPU, C434 undermines most of this central processing for $ 100-200. For example, the Acer Chromebook is 13 with Core I5-8250U and 8 GB of RAM currently 4, while RAM C434 comes with a capacity of 8 GB in MSRP at $ 600.

I am disappointed that ASUS is still adhering to 4 GB of RAM on the lower model. Although OS Chrome is generally lighter than the use of memory than Windows or MacOS, RAM prices have decreased to the point where there is no longer a lot of excuse to go with 4 GB.

There are many variables from the C434 available all over the world, but in the United States, we have 4 GB RAM and 8 GB. Both have the same basic M3 processor and 64 GB of storage. The availability of the 8 GB version is currently limited (the Amazon menu is from a third -party seller raising the price), but we hope to improve in the coming months. If you regularly deal with dozens of chrome tabs and a few Android applications, I recommend waiting so that the 8GB RAM can be obtained.

Purchase it if:

  • You want the Chromebook with good performance and battery life.

  • You cannot afford pixels.

Do not buy it if:

  • You are difficult to satisfy around keyboards.

  • You want to use a tablet mode all the time.
