Review: Shylez Senses remained as top options between homecut-enable smart locks

by red

Following my review about Yale Assure Lock SL Deadbolt with homecut support last month, several readers highlighted the Shilez senses as another satisfactory homekit alternative. It turns out that I have been using the sclares sensation at my front door for some time, so I should take a look at how the offer of Shlez has kept it over time.

Sclage Sense Parts
Scores Sense Deadbolt was one of the first homecut-capable smart locks, which was launched two years ago, yet it remained one of the most popular smart locks in the market among Apple users. In fact, Apple is featuring the shelge senses in its online and retail stores, though it is currently listed as unavailable for both online order and in-stor pickup although it remains above the shelves in some Apple retail stores.

Assure Lock SL, which only comes in a single design (with a few color options), the Sclaz sensation comes to two different styles that adapt to other hardware products in the shell: a classic camelot style and more modern century style, matte black, satin nickel and elderly bronze completion style.

I am using a Comelot-style sclage sense at the front door, because of a lockd door I accidentally lock out of my house by a matching non-locking camlot docknob. The pair looks good together, the Camelot Style also indicates elegance with a prominent keypad.

Installation

The installation of the sclage senses is straight, and the sclease includes step -by -step direction to move the process to you. As long as you are replacing the existing Deadbolt and all things are properly lined, the installation takes a few minutes and only requires a screw driver. Simply slide the Deadbolt Assembly to the edge of the door and sandwich it with the internal and external parts when attaching both sides to a cable. Pull a few screws all together and once you insert the battery you should be ready to configure your lock.

As common with smart deadbolts, the inner part of the slope senses is quite large, which is an unfortunate visual appearance. However, with lock cylinders, electronics and four AA batteries, so much can be done to reduce size.

Setup and app

Programming and setup are operated through the SHALES SENSE app [App Store]Which follows you on Bluetooth to pair your phone with your phone and configure your lock options, such as you press the keypad, automatic relocing and one-tuch locking where you don’t have to enter any code. The lock also has an AL chusic alarm mode that can be opened or closed when the door can be beep or force an alarm when forcibly detect entry.

You can register for a sclage account and add the senses or simply go directly to the homekie, allowing the Deadbolt to integrate with other homekit accessories. The homecot setup process is simple, only a few steps need. With an Apple TV, iPad or homepod around the house you can use the lock status or lock or unlock anywhere, but if you do not want to use a homekit, the shelz provides a $ 70 Wi-Fi adapter to provide remote access.

The app allows you to set up multiple user code to limit your home access. When adding a code, you will have the option to specify when the code will work on the specified day and time, which is easy for pets and others who only need temporary access to your home.

The original screen of the app gives you quick access to the lock status and unlocks a simple tap or deadbolt anywhere in large lock graphic locks. Of course, with homecut integration, you can use home applications or series to perform the same functions.

The app also lets you see a history of lock events, what the Deadbolt was locked and unlocked, as it was locked and unlocked, as it was locked or unlocked through an outward touchscreen or internal thumb turn, as well as which user code was used to unlock the exterior.

The application will not win any design awards and the iPhone X has a slight layout issue, but it does not interfere with any of the app’s activities.

General operation

The sclage senses easily operates, with a satisfactory custody with the thumb of the outer interior and common keypad operation. To enter a user code in the keypad, you need to press the “Sclage” button at the top of the pad, which illuminates the keypad and then enters the four-digit code that unlocks the door. The same process locks the door from the outside unless you turn on one-tuch locking, which you lock the sclage button when you need a user code to enter the door immediately.

When unlocking and locking, the sclage can use two separate power layers to help move the motorized dedbolt. The lock will first try to extend or withdraw the dedbolt at a lower power level, but if the alignment is stopped or the pressure on the door that provides further resistance, the lock will try to increase the strength. The motor is fairly noisy at both levels.

Higher energy is undoubtedly burning faster through the battery (how sure I’m not sure), but if your installation is properly lined, higher energy should be rarely needed. I just activated high-power mode while trying to lock and I couldn’t completely close the door. I trigger it a couple of times when I failed to unlock the door before trying to keep the door open and the pressure to push the dedbolt against the door jumble prevents the bolt from withdrawing under low-power mode.

Homekit

Addup is an easy process of scanning the homekit code during the setup process that is added to your homekit home. Once it becomes part of your house you can see and control the lock through iOS or via Siri. You can also add it to automation routine with rooms, scenes and triggers like the “Good Night” scene to secure your home while sleeping.

Shylez Sense also works with Amazon Alexa and an update should soon be available to assist Google Assistant.

Bug

My iOS 10.2 was a problem related to publishing where I was unable to apply firmware updates for my sclage senses. At that time, the Schlez Customer Service told me that this is a familiar problem with some user and when an app update was released to solve the problem I will be notified. Over time, I started to get less and less than each set of batteries and I was not able to get firmware updates on the lock again. After waiting for a few months, after waiting for a fix that has never come and my battery life should have been seen-a set of sets in just one week than 12 months, I contacted again with assistance and they quickly sent a free replacement.

Since that time, the only problem I am running is that one occasionally bug where the dedbolt is unlocked but still it seems locked. This is a very rare problem that I only notice when I try to lock the door from the keypad and nothing happens because it is waiting for me to enter an unlock code.

Except for these two things, the shelz senses were reliable throughout the time I owned and I never think myself unable to get access to my house. I have smart locks and keypads in all the entrances of my house so that any of them should help to provide peace of mind and as a result I did not carry the keys of the house on me when I left home year after year.

Up to wrap

Two years after it was launched, the shell senses remained one of the most popular homecut-enable smart locks and why it is easy to see. It comes from a trusted brand that has helped to achieve visibility among home depot, low and other retailers where homeowners shop for hardware and have a beautiful appearance of exterior keypads that are still not too heavy to be able to accept a traditional tidal key. Two different styles give you the option of fit with different looks and it was quick to send a replacement when I had a problem with lock shells.

Sclage senses are found in Camlot and Century style, satin nickel or older bronze and satin nickel or matte black. The list is $ 229, but some retailers, such as Amazon, are usually around $ 200, with Amazon, third -party retailers sometimes become less.

Note: Shylez/Alligion provided the Macumors’ Sclaz senses for free for this review. No other compensation was found. An authorized partner with Macrumors Amazon and may obtain commissions in case of purchase made through links in this article.
