Review: ActionProof’s charging stand for Apple Watch is quirky but functional

by red

The ActionProof Bozen Apple Watch Stand is unique in the sea of Apple Watch accessories due to its unusual, quirky shape. It looks more like a toy or a piece of modern art than a traditional stand, but it’s easy to use and has been more functional than other Apple Watch stands I’ve tested.

Made from a soft black silicone, Bozone has a flexible black palm-sized sphere-shaped top attached to four legs for stability. As with most Apple Watch stands, you’ll need to supply your own charging puck, which fits on the front of the Bozone. The interior of the boson is hollow, allowing it to store extra chords.

Setting up the Bozone with the Apple Watch charger was surprisingly easy, especially when it came to ditching the extra cord. There are many Apple Watch docks and stands out there that hide extra cords, but most do it in a more complicated way. With Bozone, it was simple, fast and elegant.

The first step in installing the Apple Watch charger on the stand is to fit the charging puck into the opening on the front. It fits at a downward angle, and has an additional slot that houses the cable connecting the charger. From there, the cord passes through the middle of the boson and exits through the rear right leg, which has a removable cap.

Once the charger is in place, the excess cord is pushed back inside the Bozon through the legs, until it is as short as desired. The small interior space was able to hold all the extra cords of a standard 2m Apple Watch charging cable. When the extra cord is inside the bozone, the leg cap fits back over the cord for a neat, clean look. The leg cap doesn’t fit tightly on the bozone, so I loosened it a few times, but it wasn’t a big deal when it was stationary on a desk.

An Apple Watch fits around the Bozon’s rounded top in landscape mode, with the band resting on the foot for stability. The Apple Watch is basically held in place by a magnetic connection between the watch and the charger, and that connection, wrapping the band around the feet and round body, keeps the Apple Watch from falling off or shifting around. I had no worries that my Apple Watch would fall out of place or fail to charge, and I tested it with both a 38mm and a 42mm Apple Watch.

The Bozon supports open- or closed-loop bands, but it works (and looks) best when wrapped and fastened around the body with open-loop bands like the Apple Watch Sport. My 38mm Apple Watch has a small/medium Apple Watch Sport band, and this is the smallest band that will fit on the Bozone — very close, it has to be fastened to the end hole.

I have some third-party bands that are smaller than the small/medium Apple Watch Sport bands and they don’t fit the Bozon. I have smaller wrists than the average person, though, so this shouldn’t be a problem for most people. It’s still something to be aware of.

If you have an Apple Watch with a Link bracelet, the Bozone won’t work with it due to the weight of the band. It’s also not going to work with third-party bands similar to the Link Bracelet. I didn’t have a Link bracelet on hand to try, but ActionProof’s website suggests it’s not compatible with Link bracelets.

My stainless steel Apple Watch charger fits flush in the Bozone, but the larger Apple Watch Sport charger will stretch out a bit, which doesn’t seem to affect how well the charger works. The Bozon is made entirely from silicon, so there’s no risk of scratching or otherwise damaging the Apple Watch on any part of the stand.

Because it holds the Apple Watch in a horizontal landscape orientation, the Bozone Stand works with Apple’s Nightstand mode. The Apple Watch fits best on the Bozon in landscape mode, but it can be positioned in a vertical portrait orientation by wrapping the Apple Watch band under the stand. I’m not sure why anyone would use it this way because it’s harder to get the Apple Watch on and off the stand, but it’s an available feature.

With its four widely-spaced legs, the Bozon is stable on any surface, yet compact enough not to take up much space and short enough that it won’t bump or tip over even in high-traffic areas during an accident. Plus, the silicone it’s made of is grippy enough to hold firmly on a flat surface.

When I first saw the Bozone’s odd design, I was skeptical that its shape would prevent it from being as functional as other Apple Watches on the market, but as it turns out, there are a lot of clever design choices here. The Bozone’s four legs keep it stable, the soft silicone resists scratches, and the hollow body holds more cords.

As an added benefit, it’s cute. Not everyone will love Bozon’s design, but I found it to be a refreshing change of pace from more traditional stands. It keeps my Apple Watch firmly in place without taking up too much desk space. I’ve tested several Apple Watch charging solutions and the Bozone is one of my favorites for the reasons listed above and because it’s so easy to bring my Apple Watch charger in and out when needed for travel. Bozon has the best method for dealing with excess wiring I’ve seen yet.

The only real downside to the Bozon is its price. It costs $39.99, which is cheaper than many stands on the market, but it still seems like a great value for a silicone stand without premium materials. If you like the look of the Bozon and don’t mind the price tag, it’s worth picking up. It’s not just eye candy – it’s a stand that has a lot going for it.

Of course, if you have an Apple Watch with a Link bracelet or a third-party bracelet that weighs the same, you’ll probably want to avoid the Bozon.

Benefits:
